You've spent some time studying about property and property laws. You've learned that intellectual property includes patents, trademarks, and copyrights. Sometimes people have a hard time recognizing where piracy stops and fair use starts. Our 'clearance culture' requires that permission be obtained before you can use copyrighted material...or do you?
The Federal Legislature has codified the laws to help clear the fog. Remember that there are four factors that we use to determine 'fair use' of copyrighted material. They are:
•the purpose and character of the use
•the nature of the copyrighted work
•the amount and substantiality of the portion used
•the effect of the use on the market for the original
For this project, you will create a remix/mashup video of your own. You will need to follow carefully the four factors to make certain that you do not violate any copyright laws. You may choose any school appropriate topic. The video can tell a story, be a tribute--the subject is your choice. The video must be between 3 and 5 minutes in length. Videos will be posted to your team project pages on the Wikispace. The project will remain 'private' (which means only we can see them).

Remember to refer to the Property, Freedom of Expression, and Fair Use of Media lesson pages and the Fair Use FAQs on the Teaching Copyright website. You can also review the Code of Best Practices on the Center for Social Media website. All of these sources will give you guidance on how to proceed. We want to make sure that we do not violate any copyright laws.
You may use Creative Commons music from the Free Music Play website, but you must still give credit to the author.
